Two killed in Belgium grenade attack

Two people were killed and 10 injured in a hand grenade attack in the Belgian city of Liege today.

Initial witness reports said at least one man threw up to four grenades at a bus station in the central square of the city around midday.

Police were on the scene quickly and sealed off the square, where blood was still splattered on the cobblestones. Some unconfirmed reports say the attacker is among the dead.

Reports said one of the two dead was believed to be the attacker, a man believed to be aged about 40.

He apparently lobbed several grenades at a bus shelter in Place Saint-Lambert, a busy central square. Witnesses reported four explosions and gun fire.

Belgium’s VRT television network spoke with an unidentified man who was wounded in the attack and who said “someone threw grenades and fired shots.”

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office, confirmed there had been explosions and gunfire, and that there were injuries.
