Socialists tipped to win Greek election

Greeks went to the polls today in a general election likely to produce a change in government.

Voters angered by a series of scandals and a foundering economy are expected to reject the conservative party of prime minister Costas Karamanlis in favour of the opposition socialists led by former foreign minister George Papandreou.

But it is unclear whether Mr Papandreou will be able to win an overall majority that would allow him to form a government. If he does not, new elections will have to be called.

A key difference between the two is their approach to Greece’s economic woes.

Mr Karamanlis advocates austerity while Mr Papandreou says a stimulus package is needed to jump-start the economy.

Polling stations opened at 7am local time (5am Irish time) and close at 7pm (5pm Irish time).
