Scottish police say the body of a four-year-old boy found in the Lochwinnoch area last last night has been formally identified as that of missing boy Luke Gargan.

He disappeared from his home in Cunningham Road, Saltcoats, early yesterday morning.

A man is due to appear before Kilmarnock Sheriff's Court tomorrow in connection with the death.

Luke was reported missing after his mother found his bed empty at about 7.20am yesterday. She had last seen him less than three hours earlier.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "A 35-year-old man is in custody regarding the death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

About 25 police officers, backed up by a helicopter and search dogs spent yesterday scouring gardens and woodland around Luke's home, while police divers searched nearby ponds.
