Attacks hit major resorts

LAST night’s bomb attack in Dahab is the latest of a series of terrorist outrages in Egypt, many targeting popular tourist resorts.

In 1996, 19 Greek visitors were killed in a gun attack outside a Cairo hotel.

The worst outrage was the November 1997 Luxor massacre. Terrorists gunned down more than 60 tourists at a temple in an attack that devastated the Egyptian tourist market for several years.

Earlier that year a grenade attack in Cairo killed nine German tourists.

In October 2004, the resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan were hit by bombs, killing 34 people.

The Egyptian government has said the militants who carried out the bombings were locals without international connections, but other security agencies have said they suspect al-Qaida.

Nearby Sharm el Sheikh was the scene of a devastating attack on July 21 last year. Altogether 63 people were killed and more than 120 injured.
