Postive news for Black Cats on fitness of duo

Sunderland have received positive news over the fitness of both Craig Gordon and Andy Reid ahead of the start of next season.

Scotland goalkeeper Gordon produced some inspired displays during the 2009-10 campaign, but a string of injuries limited his involvement.

One such setback was a fractured arm suffered against Tottenham in November, necessitating the insertion of a metal plate.

But club physician Dr Glen Rae told the club’s official website today: “Craig had the operation to remove the metalwork from his arm (this summer) and has also undergone bilateral hernia repairs. He is now in the final stages of his rehabilitation.”

Reid has made only five appearances in 2010 due to an ongoing calf injury which required an operation in March.

Dr Rae continued: “Andy has spent most of the summer working with our staff and he has done well. He will be ready for the start of pre-season training on Wednesday.”

He also revealed Reid’s fellow midfielder David Meyler is “progressing very well” after tearing his cruciate ligaments against Manchester United in May.
