Farrelly might miss remainder of season
Cork City’s midfielder Gareth Farrelly could miss the rest of the season after undergoing anoperation in Liverpool over the weekend.
The 33-year-old ex-Aston Villa, Everton and Bolton Wanderers star took ill while driving to Southport last week.
City boss Alan Mathews confirmed the bad news last night and said that the Dubliner was unlikely to play for the club again in the short-term and could be ruled out for the rest of the season.
“It was a serious illness and he had to have a fairly big operation and is still in hospital on Merseyside. We wish him a speedy recovery,” said Mathews.
Farrelly, who also had loan spells at Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic, Burnley and Blackpool, joined Cork when Damien Richardson was boss and is under contract to the end of November.
Cork will play Sligo Rovers at Turner’s Cross tomorrow night (7.45pm) and need a win to get back on track in the title race.
Dave Mulcahy, who was out with a groin strain, was back in training yesterday and will be added to the squad for Sligo while John O’Flynn, who bagged a brace against St Pat’s, was back at full throttle too at Bishopstown yesterday.
“Flynnie is grand and he will play on Friday night and hopefully he can bag a few more goals for us. He got 20 minutes up at St Pat’s and scored twice in 10 minutes and is itching to play against Sligo Rovers now,” he added.
Cork have Joe Gamble back from suspension this weekend as well.
