Ruud staying at United - Gill

Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is staying at the club, according to chief executive David Gill.

Gill spoke out to quash increasing speculation over the Dutch international’s future after he was linked with other clubs amid an alleged fall out with manager Alex Ferguson.

Van Nistelrooy was omitted from United’s starting line-up for their Carling Cup final success over Wigan – sparking rumours he was unhappy with life at Old Trafford.

But Gill said: “We certainly believe he will be staying with the club next year.

“He signed a new long term contract and there is two further years to go on that. He is part of our squad which we are looking to improve in the summer.

“If you are looking to improve your squad, you are not going to sell the goalscorer who can deliver 25 to 30 goals a season.

“He is very much part of our plans and we are looking forward to him playing a part in what should be a successful season.”

But Gill refused to talk about the current state of the Dutchman’s relationship with Ferguson.

“I am not going to comment on that particular issue,” said Gill.

“I am sure he’s a great player, I’m sure he would like to be playing week in, week-out, but as we know in football these days it is a big squad game and I’m sure he must be happy at Manchester United.

“I’ve not spoken to him directly, that is Alex’s job and those discussions I have with Alex will be kept private.”

Gill also insisted striker Louis Saha was not on the market either, adding that Ferguson was looking to strengthen the midfield.

“We’ve got a great defence now,” he told told Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme.

“We’ve got a great forward line and we clearly would like to strengthen the midfield.

“That is the focus of Alex, his team and me over the course of the next few months.

“We have got some ideas. We are doing our homework and a lot of diligent analysis is going on.”
