Champions League: Review

Both Milan clubs have 100% Champions League records after two rounds of this season’s competition.

While AC Milan scored two late goals to see off Celtic 3-1 at San Siro, Inter climbed to the top of Group G with a victory by the same scoreline away to Anderlecht.

Obafemi Martins gave the Nerazzurri an eighth-minute lead and further goals from Adriano and Dejan Stankovic after the interval emphasised the superiority of Roberto Mancini’s side. Walter Baseggio snatched a late consolation for the Belgian champions.

In the group’s other match, Angelos Charisteas rekindled his summer form for club side Werder Bremen, who beat 10-man Valencia 2-1 in a match between the champions of Germany and Spain.

Charisteas, who scored three priceless goals for Greece in Euro 2004 including the winners against France in the quarter-final and Portugal in the final, netted the decider for Werder as a substitute after 84 minutes.

Vicente opened the scoring for the visitors but Bremen hit back through Miroslav Klose on the hour mark just five minutes after Carlos Marchena had been dismissed.

Despite AC Milan’s win over Celtic, Barcelona hold top spot in Group F on goal difference after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0.

Deco scored his side’s first goal after 15 minutes and the Catalan giants pulled further ahead when Ronaldinho converted a penalty in the second half.

The in-form Samuel Eto’o scored a late goal to confirm Barca’s dominance.

In Group E, Arsenal lead the way despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Rosenborg.

In the other match in that pool a late goal from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave PSV Eindhoven the three points against Greek champions Panathinaikos.

In Chelsea’s Group H, substitute Sergei Semak was the hero for CSKA Moscow as the Russian club picked up the first win of their campaign at the expense of Paris St Germain.

The midfielder headed the Russian champions ahead 19 minutes into the second half and then won a penalty, which was converted by Brazilian Vagner Love.

Chelsea lead the group with six points while CSKA have four. Porto have only one while PSG are still without a point.
