PSG coach hints at Barthez move
Paris St Germain coach Vahid Halilhodzic has hinted the club may move for Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Barthez has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and, with his international place under threat, may be tempted by a move to the French capital.
Although PSG president Francis Graille said on Wednesday he was not interested in the former Monaco man, Halilhodzic offered another opinion when asked 24 hours later.
âBarthez cannot come now simply because we cannot pay him a salary even if Manchester contribute some of it,â the Bosnian said.
âBut during the winter transfer window, considering PSGâs position in the table and our ambitions, we might recruit.
âWe might get some players if we need them.â
Barthez, who won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships with France, remains in favour with national team coach Jaques Santini but that situation could soon change should the 32-year-old fail to see more playing time at United.
Santini named his squad on Thursday for the forthcoming Euro 2004 qualifier against Israel and, although Barthez was included, the France coach made it clear he wanted to see his first-choice stopper play every week at club level.
âOf course he has to remain at a certain level to keep playing with us,â said Santini.
âWe are sure and certain about his ability. On Monday he will be playing for France in a charity match in Marseille and that will allow him to get back on track.â
As for Barthezâs long-term future, he added: âThat decision will be taken later. We will see in a few months time.â
