Mols offered Dutch deal
Rangers striker Michael Mols has been offered a return to Dutch football by the club that cashed in on him five years ago.
Mols is one of a number of first-teamers whose current Ibrox deals expire in the summer, with fellow Dutchman Arthur Numan another.
Numan has already decided this season will be his last but Mols is still hopeful of an extension.
But he has also been making alternative plans and last week held talks with Utrecht, the club that sold him for £4m (€5.74m) in 1998 when Holland boss Dick Advocaat was in charge of Rangers.
Mols has been back in his homeland and an offer was made at the Dutch Cup semi-final game on April 15 between Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven, which Utrecht won 2-1.
Mols was reluctant to shed much light on the prospect of a return to his homeland.
When quizzed on the likelihood of a return to the Stadion Galgenwaard he would only say: “I don’t know if they need a player like me.”
But Utrecht direcn Berger was far more forthcoming and confirmed an offer had been made.
He said: “We offered Michael Mols a contract last week at the cup semi-final against PSV.
“He is on the top of our list for the strikers positions. We have agreed terms but we are waiting for an answer.
“The offer is based on us being willing to wait to get a yes although on the other hand we will have to make a decision by a certain time because if it doesn’t happen we will have to find an alternative.”
Utrecht know that no answer is likely before May 31, when Rangers take on Dundee in the Tennent’s Scottish Cup final.
Mols is desperate to play in that game and has vowed to concentrate on helping Rangers to the treble instead of thinking about his own future.
Manager Alex McLeish has indicated a new contract could well be offered, although it would be dependent on budget figures from the board that he has yet to receive.
Numan turned down an offer on reduced terms but Mols has yet to even begin talks.
Rangers are guaranteed a crack at the Champions League qualifiers next season and Utrecht are all close to a place in the UEFA Cup.
They are currently sixth so a push up the table could secure a place automatically, as would victory in the cup final.
But even a second successive cup final loss might be enough as opponents Feyenoord are likely to join Rangers and in the Champions League qualifiers by finishing third behind PSV and Ajax.
