Premiership: Sheringham in Euro row with Ferguson
Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham claims he ‘‘had words’’ with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after being axed from a key Champions League clash.
The England star was dropped for the two-legged quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich.
Sheringham said: ‘‘I don’t think I am speaking out of turn by saying that I have had words with the manager.
‘‘I was very disappointed that I didn’t play against Bayern Munich, especially in the first game at home, as we had enjoyed a lot of good results in Europe when I was playing.
‘‘I perhaps wasn’t at the top of my form at the time but we already had the title in the bag and the whole team had dipped in form.’’
Sheringham finished the season as United’s top scorer with 21 goals.
He also played more games than any other striker at Old Trafford and won the two player of the year awards.
United offered him a new one-year deal but instead he chose to join Spurs on a two-year deal.
He said: ‘‘It was a massive decision after four great years at Manchester United but I had to look at what was happening at the club, what players were coming in, and what was going on.
‘‘There was also the opportunity of going back to Tottenham which was amazing for me. If I had stayed another season at United that might not have happened next year.
‘‘The other factor was that going back to London means I will see more of my son Charlie, although he wanted me to stay at United. He has become a United fan now - not because of me, but after watching the likes of Becks, Scholesy and Giggsy.’’
