Toure keen to make up for lost time
The Ivorian international played just 29 league matches in the last two campaigns under Roberto Mancini at Manchester City and views his move to Anfield as the chance to make up for lost time.
āLiverpool have given me the chance to show that, at 32, Iām still one of the best defenders, and I will fight for that,ā said the centre-back, who has officially signed for the Reds after his contract expired with the former Premier League champions.
āThese past two years of being āpart-timeā have helped me refresh and be more hungry.
āI want to try and help Liverpool win trophies this season.ā
Toure leaves brother Yaya behind at the Etihad Stadium but he knew it was not an option for him to remain at the club. āI havenāt spoken to him yet because heās been on holiday but heās going to be on his own there now,ā he added.
āI wish him the best but I knew I had to leave City. Iāve come next door and thatās a great move for me.ā
Toure is seen by manager Brendan Rodgers as a short-term replacement for the retired Jamie Carragher.
He certainly has a wealth of Premier League experience, having played for Arsenal before his switch to City, but with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel still at the club he knows he will have to fight for his place.
āI am used to competition. When I came into Arsenal the competition was Sol Campbell, Martin Keown, Tony Adams ā it was hard competition,ā he said.
āThe only way to improve a team is to make players fight for their place.
āI know Jamie Carragher left the club and thatās the reason why Iām here.
āHe was massive for this club, he was a great professional and a great example for me.
āI will try to do what he did but I think thatās going to be really difficult.
āIt adds pressure because itās always hard to replace a big, big player like Jamie.
āIām looking forward to that because I like challenges. I like to lead when Iām on the pitch, I like to speak to the players and organise things.ā
Rodgers, meanwhile, has insisted captain Steven Gerrard forms an integral part of his plans for the next few years.
The England midfielder missed the final two matches of last season to have surgery on a persistent shoulder problem but the Reds boss does not envisage any issues with him for the start of the new campaign.
āHeās 33 now but Steven is still an integral part of what Iām trying to do here and will be for the next few years,ā he said.
