Cole and Bergkamp believe Arsenal can retain title

Wenger, speaking after Arsenal's Community Shield victory over Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium, said: "If Patrick is focused to leave there will be an open door".

It is believed Wenger has given the French midfielder until next Saturday - the start of the Premiership season - to make up his mind about a move to Real Madrid.

Vieira is wanted by the Spanish club but while there has been talk of a £23m bid Arsenal claim no offer has yet been made.

"We have been disrupted in our preparations by this talk," said Wenger.

"We respect what he has done and until now he has given eight years to the club. We want him to be focused on the club not half in and half out. Everyone wants him to stay and he can make a difference. We want players to be committed to the club it is not about money at all.

"We want Patrick to stay and for him to be committed and for him to make his mind up. If he is focused to leave there will be an open door if we can make an agreement."

Ashley Cole and Dennis Bergkamp believe Arsenal can retain their Premiership title following yesterday's victory. Gilberto, Jose Reyes and a Mikael Silvestre own goal gave Arsenal the Shield with Alan Smith scoring for United.

Cole said: "This proves we are going to be a force to be reckoned with again this season. United didn't have a full-strength team out there and neither did we but we are aware everyone will be trying to beat us after going all last season unbeaten in the league.

"We will try to keep the run going and try to win every game and win the title again."

Dutchman Bergkamp is looking to end what is likely to be his final season at Highbury with the Premiership trophy. "I think we can win it again. There is such a lot of quality in this team and so many good young players coming through," he said.

"I do not read too much into this game but it shows we are ready for the season. We have a very good squad and they are all up for the challenge ahead. For me, hopefully it is still there. I will have one more good season and see where it gets me."

Thierry Henry revealed afterwards he is fit to take part in next week's Premiership opener at Everton.

The French international striker said: "The most important thing for me was to go through the first-half without feeling my Achilles tendon. I felt it at the beginning of the match but at the end of the first-half I was fine. I'll be ready for Everton.

"We've showed without some key players and Manchester United were as well - that we can play football and that's the important thing."

Singling out Cesc Fabregas and Reyes for particular credit, Henry added: "It's nice to win."

United boss Alex Ferguson had one eye on Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest.

He said: "Arsenal were the better team but I am happy to get through with no injuries. Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs needed to come off with Wednesday in mind. Some good football was played by both teams and the game had an edge to it."
