Roy keen on new striker

ROY KEANE believes Manchester United have enough strength in depth to mount a championship charge in the New Year.

However, the Old Trafford captain has reiterated his view that if he had a choice he would like to see another striker added to the ranks.

With the transfer window opening next month, United have been linked with a number of top players Mark Viduka of Leeds being one of them.

However, their injury situation is beginning to ease.

Paul Scholes has returned to action and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on his way back. Not only that, defender Wes Brown has been pencilled in for a reserve match next week after a knee operation.

Keane said: "A striker would be very important for us especially for the Champions League and our own Premiership. The FA Cup is also starting in January.

"But that's up to the manager. I wouldn't like to try to tell him what to do.

"I am sure he has a few people lined up. But if not we'll just get on with it because we've got an outstanding squad.

"With Scholesy, Wes and Ole coming back in the next few weeks, we are okay."

United go to Tottenham tomorrow, aiming to keep the pressure on Arsenal and Chelsea at the top. "People say this is a key point of the season but every match is important, especially the way Chelsea and Arsenal are going. We can't afford any slip-ups.

"I hope there is plenty more to come. We've had little spells where we have played some decent football.

"Generally I don't think we have been as consistent as we can be but that always seems to be the case every year.

"At Christmas we feel there is a lot more to come and the second half of the season we always seem to kick in.

"That's what we need to do again. I am sure there is plenty more to come from the team."

Ferguson says he intends to rotate his squad over the busy festive period and that could mean a recall at some stage for the likes of midfielder Nicky Butt.

Central defender Rio Ferdinand will play at White Hart Lane, despite the eight month ban imposed by the FA yesterday.

Ferguson says the team are progressing well and ready to push on. He said: "Our performances are getting a bit better now and the team are looking very confident.

"It has been a very welcome break, having a blank week. We don't normally get this, it's unusual. But we'll take it because the Christmas period is always quite a congested time of the year. You just hope you have the squad to handle it all."

Spurs boss David Pleat expects United to shrug off the distraction of Ferdinand, insisting: "I very much doubt Rio's case takes the focus off their preparations. There's always an issue of some sort at the biggest clubs. We've just got to hope they've had lots of Christmas parties this week.

He said: "It's a hard game to restore our fortunes. I think they've done the double over us in the last two seasons, but it's not a tricky fixture, it's a lovely Christmas present. My players should enjoy playing against United.

"We couldn't kill Middlesbrough off and we couldn't get the final ball precise enough. But I genuinely think they've had an unlucky week so far."

With Dean Richards struggling with a knee injury, Pleat could have recalled Ledley King from his midfield role to deal with the threat of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has 19 goals for club and country already this season.

But the task of marking him will go to former striker Gary Doherty instead, despite Pleat having to look no further than the security guard at Tottenham's Chigwell training ground for a warning of the Dutchman's ability.

Pleat said: "Three years ago the Dutch team came to train here before playing against England and our security man watched them.

"He told me in all his time here he'd never seen anyone finish as well as that and said put your money on him to win the golden boot. He didn't do it but he did it the following season."

Meanwhile Bobby Charlton has opened a restaurant-bar owned by Manchester United in China's Sichuan province as part of efforts to negotiate the transfer of Chinese teenage striker Dong Fangzhuo.

Speculation has been rife that United are preparing a £3.5m bid for the 18-year-old forward during January's transfer window.
