Queudrue decides it for Boro in penalty shoot-out
Darren Anderton became the first player to score against Boro in more than 11 hours’ play but then Michael Ricketts, whom Spurs spurned the chance to sign in January, struck a late equaliser to force extra-time.
Penalties were needed to separate the two sides and while Kasey Keller saved from Gaizka Mendieta after Gus Poyet had missed, Mauricio Taricco then hit the post and left Queudrue to secure victory.
Boro’s run without conceding a goal may have extended to 669 minutes before kick-off, but it lasted for just 63 seconds more before Spurs struck. Dean Richards started the move with an invitation for Stephen Carr to attack the space in front of him down the right flank.
Colin Cooper could only half-clear the ensuing cross and Darren Anderton pounced to rifle his shot past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer. Schwarzer also had to tip Ledley King’s header over the bar when the midfielder rose to meet Anderton’s corner. When Boro’s best opening did come on the stroke of half-time, with Michael Ricketts taking the ball around Kasey Keller from Danny Mills’ pass, he struck the side netting.
Spurs threatened again on the counter-attack in injury time, but Schwarzer managed to push Keane’s shot around the post.
Spurs made one change at the interval, with Gary Doherty replacing the injured Dean Richards, while Boro
responded with Stewart Downing coming on for Maccarone.
Downing settled into a left-wing role, freeing Zenden to move inside and releasing Juninho further forward. It was down that left flank that Boro, now with more of a spring in their step, threatened next, with Zenden delivering a cross that Ricketts headed too close to Keller.
McClaren was becoming increasingly frustrated with his side, especially when they lost possession with 62 minutes gone and allowed Spurs to attack again. Keane’s persistence took him as far as the byline but Southgate just did enough to prevent Kanoute from reaching the ensuing cutback.
Rohan Ricketts went down under a challenge from Cooper but his penalty appeals were waved away amid a frantic final spell.
While Gus Poyet replaced Anderton with 13 minutes left, Boro turned to Szilard Nemeth in place of Cooper and they almost equalised, only for Keller to deny Juninho with an excellent reaction save.
Finally, the visitors did make the breakthrough as Nemeth put Boateng away down the right flank and when Ricketts beat Carr to the cross, he was able to sweep his shot past Keller.
Ricketts almost headed home the winner for Boro in injury time but Keller pulled off a remarkable one-handed save to tip the ball over the bar to bring the game to extra time.
