Shearer and Kluivert the Newcastle aces
United skipper Shearer claimed the second European hat-trick of his career and Kluivert scored twice as the Magpies beat Israeli minnows Hapoel Bnei Sakhnin 7-1 on aggregate.
Kluivert's brace took him to four goals in the tie and six for the season, although Shearer claimed his fourth, fifth and sixth of the campaign to keep the Dutchman in his sights.
Sakhnin were full of vigour, but their physical approach was no match for Graeme Souness' side despite briefly getting themselves back on terms with Congalese striker Alain Masudi's 13th-minute strike.
The manager had chosen to rest Shearer and Bellamy for the first leg, but with the pair restored and joined by Kluivert he wanted a quick return, and he got it. On nine minutes Kluivert twice exchanged passes with Jermaine Jenas to split the home defence, and the Dutchman side-footed the ball home for the opener.
Shearer proved equally clinical seven minutes before the break when Sakhnin keeper Murambadoro spilled the ball, and the former England captain slammed home the 350th league and cup goal of his career. Kluivert struck again four minutes later, sliding the ball expertly home after Laurent Robert had scythed his way through.
The home side had threatened to make it a tense evening when Masudi capitalised on slack defending to convert Ahmed Kassom's 13th-minute cross, and the visitors were forced to defend doggedly more than once.
Souness replaced Shay Given with Steve Harper at half-time, and he had been on the pitch for only seven minutes when his side increased their lead. Jenas was fouled in the box and Shearer converted to make it 4-1 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate.
The home side's night went from bad to worse when Murambadoro handled outside his box and got a red card. Shearer took advantage to blast a superb left-foot drive in injury time.
