Crucial derby clash in Cork

There have been many big derby games between Sundays Well and Highfield over the years, but few will have been as important as tonight’s clash at Musgrave Park (7.30pm).

Crucial derby clash in Cork

In terms of the Ulster Bank League Division 2B, three plays two, with both hoping against hope that they can finish the season as champions.

However, Highfield are in a better position to do so. The Model Farm Road outfit lie second behind leaders City of Derry but by just a point, while the ‘Well are three points further down in third - four points better off than Greystones.

Two teams will go up, the top finisher and one of four clubs who will have to participate in a complicated play-off. The bottom club in Division 2A will be relegated, the second last team forced into that play-off grouping with a home semi-final tie against the fourth finisher in Division 2B.

The other semi will be between teams two and three with home advantage going to the team placed second.

Should Highfield win tonight, they will jump into pole position (temporarily at least) and will then hope that Derry’s woes continue against Bective Rangers in Donnybrook today. However, a Sunday’s Well win would see them join Derry at the top or they would move ahead with the bonus point. With so much at stake, it’s sure to be an exciting weekend.
