Nearly one million tune in for France clash

IRELAND’s historic Six Nations clash with France attracted almost one million viewers to RTÉ television.

An average of 876,000 viewers tuned into RTÉ Two’s coverage with the audience peaking at 997,000. The previously Six Nations record was Ireland Triple Crown Win against England in 2006 which attracted an average of 643,000. The figures also made it the most watched programme on the station this year.

Glen Killane, Group Head of Sport RTÉ, said: “I am delighted that a record number of viewers watched our comprehensive coverage on such an historic day, and we look forward to bringing all the upcoming RBS Six Nations games to the public live and free-to-air.”

Meanwhile Leinster’s Kieran Lewis is to join Munster at the end of the season. The 26-year-old, a former Schools and U21 international won a senior international cap in the June 2005 tour to Japan and last Friday night won his eighth A international cap when he partnered Barry Murphy in the centre against England at Ravenhill.

Said Lewis: “They (Munster) are a great side and I believe this is a good opportunity for me. Yes there are regrets to be leaving Leinster. I’ve enjoyed my time and learned a lot here. I hope to help them achieve a few things before the end of the season.”

Meanwhile Declan Kidney has announced a 23 strong squad for Munster’s clash with Border Reivers in Galashiels on Friday.
