Strong hand for Hannon

Richard Hannon dominates the field for tomorrow’s £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster with six of the 22 runners.

A number of the East Everleigh raiders are likely to be leading contenders, notably the consistent Godfrey Street and recent Newbury third Gramm.

Hannon also runs Windsor scorer Envision and the experienced trio Sonny Santino, The Snatcher and Hot.

Howard Johnson is likely to play a strong hand in proceedings for the valuable six-furlong prize too and will run two of his best juveniles, Norfolk Stakes winner Masta Plasta and Coventry Stakes runner-up Pacific Pride.

Fellow leading two-year-old trainer Eoghan O’Neill is also doubly represented with Memphis Man and Pickett, who was second in the Molecomb Stakes last time.

Brian Meehan runs Sleeping Storm, Coburn and Johnny The Fish, while both River Kintyre and Mr Sandicliffe go for Barry Hills.

Hills’ son John will also be out for the money with Calypso King, who was an impressive winner of a Chester nursery last time.

The grey son of Agnes World has now scored on his last two starts, both over five furlongs, and is held in some regard by his trainer.

“This is his first step up to six since his first run but we think it will suit,” said Hills.

“He won very well last time and he thrives off a fast pace. He has a bit of scope about him and is a very, very nice horse.

“It’s a fair old step up in class but he’s in good shape and it’s a big prize.”

Layazaal is the only unbeaten horse in the race following his smooth victory in a decent June Newbury maiden and is a rare runner in this sort of race for John Dunlop and Hamdan Al Maktoum.

Rider Richard Hills told At The Races: “I didn’t ride him first time but he won well at Newbury.

“I think he’s had a bit of a problem because he hasn’t run for a while but he has got over that and John is very pleased with him.

“It’s worth a lot of money and it’s nice to be in there with a chance.”
