Leave it to Landau

Landau could hardly be described as the most reliable horse in training, but does look good enough to win the Botanica International Natural Herbal Products Maiden Hurdle at Downpatrick this afternoon.

Encouragingly, there have been signs of late that Gordon Elliott’s charge is beginning to go forward and this certainly represents a very suitable opportunity.

At the Galway festival, Landau produced a solid enough effort to finish fourth behind

Saturday’s hurdles winner at Killarney, Pyromaniac, in a 12 furlongs handicap on the flat. The four-year-old then returned to jumping at Tramore eight days ago and put up his best effort to date to date over flights.

He found himself a little short of room before the second last, before running on strongly late to finish a length second behind the odds-on Gusty Rock. The selection has an extra two and a half furlongs to travel on this occasion and rates the nap.

Mags Mullins’ once-raced Young Dillon, Katie Walsh is obviously a good booking, is the fancy in the Racing Post Ladies’ Bumper.

He made a reasonably promising start at Cork three weeks ago, third behind Willie Mullins’ Bosman Rule, and can only benefit from the experience.

Lucky Pigeon could well defy top weight in the Willie Murphy Jewellers’ Downpatrick Handicap Hurdle.

She has a 4lbs penalty to carry, after scoring by four lengths at Kilbeggan on Friday night.

The extra is more than offset, however, by the booking of talented 5lbs claimer, Jonathan Burke.

Better Back Bob, beaten a length into second by Big Kern on this track last time, is the choice in the Fran and Maree Murrin Memorial Cup Maiden Hurdle.
