Cathal Doyle spoke with RTÉ after his 1500m semi-final. Doyle had mixed emotions about the race but is happy to run a PB.Â
"Mixed emotions you know I felt like it was there it wasn’t going away from me. But they were a bit more comfortable longer into the race than I was. Maybe it was the extra round, that’s my fault. But its hard to be too disappointed when I ran a second PB. Back in May my PB was 3:36.08.
"Its not just the physical it’s the mental getting up for a race three days in a row but its hard not to be too disappointed with that."
Cathal Doyle finishes in 10th place in his 1500m semi-final ruinning a PB of 3:33.15 and will not progress into the final with just the top six going through.Â
Cathal Doyle will be running in the Men's 1500m semi-final at 8.10pm. He will be the last of the Irish in action today.Â
After the excitement of another bronze for Team Ireland and our seveth medal overall, the most in any Olympic games, its now time to turn our attention to the Stade de France for the athletics as Cathal Doyle will run in the 1500m semi-final at 8.10pm.
Speaking to RTÉ after the race Daniel Wiffen said he was" happy but disappointed at the same time".Â
"I did try digging deep, tried to push it but I didn't have enough today.
"Being an Olympic champion is like a dream come true. I did have sights set on a world record but today wasn't the day. We will be back better next time."
When asked if he was looking forward to the 10km and looking forward to going home Wiffen replied "I am looking forward to that. But tonight I'm going to celebrate"
"To be honest, it's quite emotional. Today's race didn't go my way, but who cares, I'm Olympic champion."
Daniel Wiffen has added a 1500m freestyle bronze medal to the 800m he won here in Nanterre to the west of Paris last Tuesday. The USA’s Bobby Finke claimed gold with an astonishing time of 14:30.67.
The 23-year old Irishman had predicted that it would need a world record time to win this race after the heats on Saturday morning. He wasn’t wrong with Finke defending his title and taking the win with a new global best time of 14:30.67.
Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy shadowed Finke the entire way but never caught the American who took the lead early and never relinquished it. Wiffen came in just shy of nine seconds after the American and just over a second ahead of Hungary’s David Betlehem.Â
A bronze medal is a superb achievement but it is not the colour the Magheralin man wanted. Double world champion in the 800 and 1500, he had gotten the better of Finke in the shorter distance but not this time.
Wiffen had qualified fastest from the heats with a time of 14:40.34 but two of the field here had previously swam the distance faster than his PB of 14:34.07, which he had set when winning the World Championships earlier this year.
With 500m to go Daniel Wiffen is still in third with Bobby Finke swimming under World Record pace.
At the half-way mark Daniel Wiffen is in third behind America's Bobby Finke and Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri.
Daniel Wiffen makes his way poolside. He will swim in lane four having qualified as the fastest.Â
Offaly's Megan Armitage has finished in 35th place in the Women's Road Race after a gruelling 158km. A brilliant debut from Armitage who took up cycling seriously in 2020 during lockdown.Â
It is nearly time for the Men's 1500m Men's Freestyle final with Daniel Wiffen going into the final as the fastest qualifier. Wiffen will be aiming for his second gold of the Olympics. Watch live on RTÉ 2 at 5.37pm.Â

Nicola Tuthill was speaking to RTÉ after her Hammer Throw qualification. She is happy with her performance and is still looking to breaking the 70 mark which has eluded her to date.Â
“It's amazing the stadium is so full its just so loud its such a good crowd its amazing" said Tuthill about the stadium atmosphere.
"I am happy I am always looking for the 70 and I have been at 69.90 twice now at my last two competitions. So I am dying to break it. I am not massively far off it, I guess 71 needed to make the final so I would have had to PB but to be able to bring out the 69 was yeah.
"I am only 20 I was the youngest one in the field there for hammer. To be here was amazing and the first throw didn’t go my way so I was a little bit stressed I was like I have to get one out now. To be able to follow with a 68 and 69 I am so happy."
Olympic gold medallist Rhys McClenaghan was at the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris and Brendan O'Brien chatted to him about his rountine on competition day.
In her third throw Nicola Tuthill hit 69.90 and improvement on her second throw and finished in 16th overall. She misses out on the final by 1m 16cm. An impressive first Games for the 20-year-old from Bandon.
