England’s Stuart Davis, a 35-year-old European Tour rookie ranked 561st in the world, burst from two behind to one in front in the first two holes of the final round at the Spanish Open in Girona today.

Davis started off the biggest round of his life with birdie putts of six and four feet while overnight leader Thomas Levet bogeyed the second.

After both birdied the long third they were 15 under par and 14-under respectively, with Irish defending champion Peter Lawrie and Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti joint third two further back.

Like Davis, Zanotti birdied the first three holes.
