Cork woman charged with possession of €210,000 worth of heroin and money-laundering €13,000 cash

Gardaí objected to bail being granted to defendant on the basis she would continue with drug activities

It is alleged 1.5kg of heroin with a street value of €210,000 was seized on Wednesday evening.

Some €210,000 worth of heroin was allegedly seized in the Blackrock area of Cork, and now a woman facing a drug-dealing charge in relation to the 1.5kgof the drug has been remanded in custody until October 22.

Diane Hallahan, solicitor, said the accused woman was consenting to a four-week remand in custody while directions are sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Detective Garda James Byrd said it was alleged 1.5kg of heroin with a street value of €210,000 was seized on Wednesday evening.

43-year-old Sandra Byrne, of Upper Convent Road, Blackrock, Cork, is charged with possession of diamorphine and she is additionally charged with money-laundering in respect of €12,980 cash.

Detective Garda Linda O’Keeffe objected to bail being granted to Ms Byrne. As well as alleged involvement in the drugs transaction, it was alleged her house was searched and €12,980 cash was found concealed under clothes in a laundry basket.

Det Garda O’Keeffe testified: “She now has a substantial drug debt to repay and I have no doubt Sandra Byrne will continue with drug activities.” 

Ms Hallahan said the seized material had yet to be forensically examined. Det Garda O’Keeffe said she was satisfied from the appearance and packaging that what was seized was diamorphine.
