Donald leads Honda Classic

England's Luke Donald fired a bogey-free six-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over compatriot Brian Davis after the opening round of the Honda Classic last night.

The world number 16 holed six birdies in a bogey-free round as he searches for a first PGA title since capturing his second career crown at the 2006 Honda Classic.

The 30-year-old, knocked out in the second round of the Accenture World Match Play by Angel Cabrera last week, birdied the third, fourth, 10th and 13th before producing a superb tee shot to two feet on the 179-yard 15th.

Donald managed to save par at the next after driving into a bunker and on the 604-yard last pitched to four feet for a sixth birdie.

"I really played pretty consistently throughout the day - I did a lot of good things around the greens and when I had my chances I took them," said Donald. "I need to improve my driving, though. I probably hit only half the fairways.

"It's nice to have a tournament close to home. You always feel a bit more relaxed and at ease, I suppose, and that sometimes can translate to good golf.

"Obviously I've won not at this venue before, but just down the road at Mirasol. Sometimes staying at home can be an advantage.
