Woods is the host of the season-ending event at Thousand Oaks but his first-round 68 meant he had to settle for a share of second place with Geoff Ogilvy, with Stenson out in front.

The Swede carded a six-under-par 66 to put himself in early contention for the $1.35m (€1m) first prize put up by Woods.

Paul Casey, Fred Couples, John Daly and Colin Montgomerie all finished at three-under 69 and are tied for fourth. Chris DiMarco and Jose Maria Olazabal are tied for eighth at two-under.

Defending champion Luke Donald struggled to a four-over 76 and is 15th in the 16-player field.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington is nine shots off the lead after shooting a disappointing 75.
