Ferrie hopes to carry on US Open form

Kenneth Ferrie hopes to improve on his dreadful record in the British Open Championship after a superb US Open debut last month.

Ferrie played in the final group with world number two Phil Mickelson and eventually finished sixth in only his third professional tournament in the United States.

The 27-year-old from Ashington felt it was “a missed opportunity” after finishing just three shots behind eventual winner Geoff Ogilvy, but has taken a lot of positives from the week.

Now he is looking to improve on a British Open record that sees four failures to qualify followed by two missed cuts in the last three years. The only time he has made the cut was at Troon in 2004, when he finished 42nd.

“I think the one thing I’m so happy about is that so many people have come up to me since I came back and said: ‘Well done. You played really well and totally outplayed everybody,’” Ferrie said.

“Although I shot 76 on the last day and finished sixth, I think anybody that saw the highlights would agree that for most of the day, without blowing my own trumpet, I was the most steady golfer on the course. Out of all the players I hit the most fairways and greens.”
