As David Howell cemented a place in the Ryder Cup team for next September's showdown at the K Club with his BMW Championship win, Ireland's hopefuls failed to make significant progress.

Paul McGinley, who was out of action following his knee surgery, remains the only Irishman within the automatic Ryder Cup places.
