Jacquelin reigns in Spain

France’s Raphael Jacquelin won the Madrid Open by three shots – his first European tour victory in 238 events.

The 31-year-old from Lyon saw his seven-stroke overnight lead, the biggest of the season, reduced to three by Scot Paul Lawrie’s front-nine 31, but that was the closest the 1999 Open champion could get.

Jacquelin, who had previously had 27 top-10 finishes, could not match his three opening rounds of 64, but a 69 gave him the £114,727 (€168,000) first prize with a 23-under-par total of 261.

Lawrie, whose last success was the 2002 Wales Open, had his second runners-up finish of the year, while Darren Clarke and Dane Anders Hansen were tied third.
