New twist in Cup tale for Parnevik

In the continuing saga of the Ryder Cup eligibility controversy, Jesper Parnevik has rejoined the European Tour and can now win a fourth cap in Detroit this September.

Parnevik resigned a month ago after saying he could not commit himself to the 11 European Tour events needed to be eligible.

Britain’s Luke Donald and his fellow Swedes Carl Pettersson and Mathias Gronberg joined him, but on Tuesday Ryder Cup captain Bernhard Langer discovered that playing in the qualifying competitions for Majors counts towards the 11.

Parnevik is among the entries for the Open qualifier at Sunningdale on June 28 and since he is also in the field for the NEC World Championship in August as a member of the last Ryder Cup team he clearly feels he can make the 11 now.

His chances of making the team have still suffered, however. He did not collect points from September until January because he was not a member of the team and his tally has stayed static for the past month as well.

He could, of course, be handed one of Langer’s two wild cards.
