Cork football Round 3 previews: Valley Rovers can deliver early elimination for Nemo Rangers

Of the remaining 54 teams, 47 of them are chasing progression and campaign extension this weekend

Cork Intermediate AFC (all games 3pm)

Group 1: Glanworth v Kilmurry, Ballyanley (S O’Rourke); Verdict: Kilmurry

Ilen Rovers v Buttevant, Carrigadrohid (B Coniry); Verdict: Buttevant

Group 2: Mitchelstown v Dromtarriffe, Ballyclough (S Scanlon); Verdict: Mitchelstown

St Finbarr’s v Gabriel Rangers, Ballinacarriga (J Kelleher); Verdict: St Finbarr’s

Group 3: Adrigole v Kildorrery, Brinny (K O’Sullivan); Verdict: Adrigole

Cork Premier IFC (all games 5pm)

Group 1:  Glanmire v Bantry Blues, Clonakilty (J Enright): A Glanmire win over already eliminated Bantry, coupled with an Uibh Laoire victory over Rockchapel, and both margins of victory adding up to 11 points, would send Glanmire through. Conversely, a first Bantry win of the campaign would guarantee their safety and, in the process, condemn Glanmire to a relegation play-off. Verdict: Glanmire

Uibh Laoire v Rockchapel, Banteer (C Lane): Unbeaten Uibh Laoire can secure direct passage to the semis with just a draw. Rockchapel are in pole position for second, but even in defeat, it is protection of their +2 score difference they need to be mindful of. Especially so when the opposition racked up 7-33 across Rounds 1 and 2. Verdict: Uibh Laoire

Group 2:  Kiskeam v Macroom, Kanturk (B Sweeney): Macroom have been involved in the last three relegation play-offs in this third-tier grade. They know that a win early this evening will carry them to within an hour of the county final. The intrigue is that Kiskeam are in the very same boat. Verdict: Kiskeam

Aghada v Castletownbere, Rossmore (B Crowley): Progression and a relegation play-off are on the table for both sides. The loser will move to within one hour of the drop. The winner can wind up in the last six, depending on the outcome of the Kiskeam-Macroom tie. Verdict: Aghada

Group 3:  Fermoy v Ballinora, Glenville (W King): Same as the other game in this group, this fixture carries winner-takes-all status. Relegated last year, Fermoy want knockout involvement so as to increase their prospects of having the shortest possible Premier Intermediate stay, whereas promoted Ballinora are attempting to reach the quarters at the first attempt. Verdict: Fermoy

Naomh Abán v Nemo Rangers, Ballincollig (A Hyland): Nemo’s marginally superior score difference means a draw will suffice for the club’s second-string outfit. Ed Myers and Dónal Ó Ceallaigh have been Naomh Abán's leading scorers in their two outings to date. The inside pair will endeavour to keep alive a campaign seeking to reach a third consecutive semi-final - at the very least. Verdict: Naomh Abán

SUNDAY

Cork Senior AFC (all games 2pm)

Group 1:  Kanturk v Aghabullogue, Macroom (C Walsh): Between hurling, football, and FAI Junior Cup soccer, the busy Aghabullogue lads have a full plate. This may be their first domino to fall, unless of course Ray Keane’s promoted charges can better a Kanturk dual group buoyant after hammering Blackrock last week. Grantas Bucinskas, Cian Clernon, Daniel O’Connell, and the Walshs will lead Kanturk's charge for another Sunday of moving on. Verdict: Kanturk

Beál Átha'n Ghaorthaidh v Dohenys, Kilmichael (R Whelan): With two draws in the opening two rounds, Niall Hurley’s Dohenys now require victory to deliver knockout involvement. Sean Murphy, Keith White, and Fionn Herlihy will ask difficult questions of the opposition defence. Beál Átha'n Ghaorthaidh won the corresponding group fixture by three 12 months ago. The collective belief of a repeat result will be high after responding to the 11-point Kanturk beating with a four-point triumph over Aghabullogue. Verdict: Dohenys

Group 2:  Carbery Rangers v Newmarket, Carrigadrohid (P O’Leary): A four-year wait for group victory finally ended, can Rosscarbery now push on and bank the second victory needed to be part of the last six? In John O’Rourke, Dylan O’Neill, Darragh Hayes, and Mark Hodnett, they possess the forwards to achieve this goal. To end Newmarket’s winning start and prevent their first progression from the group stages since 2023, Hugh O’Connor and Ryan O’Keeffe - the pair have kicked 0-12 apiece to date - have to be stopped. Verdict: Carbery Rangers.

Cill na Martra v O’Donovan Rossa, Enniskeane (C Murphy): The presence or otherwise of Kevin Davis will be the deciding factor in the strength of O’Donovan Rossa’s challenge. Having kicked a dozen points first day out, he was marked absent for the subsequent defeat to Rosscarbery. A third defeat here would leave them an hour from the drop. Sean Ó Foirreidh, and Dan and Shane Ó Duinnín can steer 2025 beaten finalists Cill na Martra back into the knockout stages. Verdict: Cill na Martra

Group 3:  Bishopstown v Clyda Rovers, Páirc Uí Rinn (J Bermingham): Bottom line here is that the loser will contest the relegation play-off. In the event of a draw, it is Clyda who will slip into said relegation play-off. A very busy afternoon for Clyda’s evergreen Paudie Kissane as the Douglas team he coaches have a must-win fixture in Shanbally that’ll throw in around 35 minutes after the final whistle in Páirc Uí Rinn.

Verdict: Bishopstown

Éire Óg v Kilshannig, Grenagh (A Long): Bottom line here is that the winner goes direct to the semis. No surprise to see Éire Óg in the position of having qualified with a round to spare. Their ambitions stretch far beyond group phase navigation. But for similarly progressed Kilshannig, this has been thus far a second Senior A campaign of prominence. Testing their wares against Colm O’Callaghan, Daniel Goulding, Darragh Clifford, Jack Murphy, and Conor McGoldrick will tell them exactly where they're at. Verdict: Éire Óg

Cork Premier SFC (all games 4pm)

Group 1:  Carrigaline v Douglas, Shanbally (N Hayes): Brian O’Driscoll and Callum Barrett were absent for Carrigaline’s two-point win over Mallow because of injury. The pair’s return would be timely for a fixture which if they were to lose by four points, coupled with a Barrs win, would relegate them from first to third in the group. Looking in the other direction, if Éanna Desmond (0-13) and Brian Coakley (0-6) can continue their fine scoring form, semi-final fast-tracking is a real possibility. Luis Dwan‑Fogarty, Seán Coakley, and Shane Kingston will be the key figures in Douglas’ bid to stage a final-day jump from third into the knockout places. Verdict: Carrigaline

St Finbarr’s v Mallow, Kilworth (D Murnane): Brian Hayes will be a loss for the county champions, but not an insurmountable one such is the depth in Brian Roche’s Barrs group. Already in possession of a healthy +9 score difference, Steven Sherlock and co will know the importance of keeping the flags raised so as to give the Barrs the highest possible seeding moving on. Was the failed comeback against Carrigaline the end of Mallow’s championship? They need a 10-point win here, and a Carrigaline win elsewhere, to advance.

Verdict: St Finbarr's

Group 2:  Valley Rovers v Nemo Rangers, Ballyanley (J Ryan): Valleys know theirs is the opportunity to deliver early elimination for Nemo. All that was so impressive in the victory over Newcestown must be replicated here. All that was not - chiefly, the concession of three goals in the opening 45 minutes - must be removed. It is 2021 since Nemo last failed to emerge from the group phase. Mark Cronin missed the rebounding win over Michael’s and his availability won’t become clear until 4pm. Ross Corkery, Luke Horgan, Kevin O’Donovan, and Bryan Hayes can again keep the dial moving in any continued Cronin absence.

Verdict: Nemo Rangers

Newcestown v St Michael’s, Riverstick (J Regan): Jim O’Sullivan’s Newcestown are endeavouring to secure back-to-back county quarter-final appearances for the first time since 2020. With St Michael’s winless and carrying the tag of the championship’s lowest scorers - they’ve managed just 3-15 across their opening two games - back-to-back quarter-finals is eminently achievable. Seamus O’Sullivan, the provider of 0-7 in the win over Nemo, missed the Valleys defeat because of injury and it remains to be seen if he will return to assist David Buckley and Jack Meade in delivering their progression. Verdict: Newcestown

Group 3:  Clonakilty v Ballincollig, Kilmurry (A O’Connor): A draw will do for group leaders Clon. They could also go through in defeat. The outcomes that would save them in that instance are a Castlehaven-Knocknagree draw, a Haven victory over Knocknagree, or a Knocknagree win by at least four points greater than any Ballincollig triumph over Clon. Darragh Gough and Dylan Harrington are understood to be injury concerns for the West Cork outfit.

Verdict: Clonakilty

Knocknagree v Castlehaven, Páirc Uí Rinn (P O’Driscoll): Having missed the Barrs’ final round hurling group game last weekend because of injury, the expectation is that Jack Cahalane will now also sit out the final round of football fare. Defeat to the Senior A champions would represent the first time in the seven years of the current format where Castlehaven have failed to emerge from the group phase. Knocknagree know from their near-miss league decider defeat that they can stand equal with Castlehaven. Can Fintan and Denis O’Connor, and Michael and Eoghan McSweeney, point the way towards a stunning upset?

Verdict: Castlehaven.
