After a first group defeat since August 2022, what is the response of the county champions? The Sars line-up could be without Conor O’Sullivan and Daniel Hogan, both of whom are understood to be nursing injuries. Travelling in the other direction is Cathal McCarthy. Might today mark his comeback game following cruciate cursing? While now two years in the rearview mirror, Newtown gave Sars their fill of it in the 2024 group phase. That Mourneabbey clash ended in a two-point win for Johnny Crowley’s side. They’d gladly take the same here.

There can be no backward step from Charleville. They must seize the momentum generated from downing the champions first day out. They must continue down the favourable road they have laid out for themselves. Darragh Fitzgibbon, David Forde, and Conor Buckley will be central to delivering such. Shane Kingston and Brian Turnbull stand at the front of a Douglas side bidding to end a two-year wait for a group victory.

After a summer that started on such a high for Newcestown’s dual cohort, it has been a rough couple of weeks since the football win over Nemo. Defeats to Bride Rovers in the hurling and Valley Rovers on the football side has thrown uncertainty over both group campaigns. The 0-7 they managed from play when falling by nine to Bride Rovers will require massive improvement here. Conor Lehane, Killian McDermott, and Paul Connaughton can keep Midleton on track for the top seeding and direct progress to the semis.

The Barrs are chasing points and demanding a performance. They want both here. Anything less will be an unsatisfactory outcome in response to the unsatisfactory nature of their second-half no-show in the eight-point defeat to Midleton. Their Premier Senior status secured courtesy of that nine-point win over Newcestown, newly promoted Bride Rovers are now eyeing the stunning upset that would be a top-two finish. Beyond the Roche brothers, Cillian Tobin, and Ronan O’Connell, all of whom impressed three weeks ago, so many more will have to stand up if the Barrs are to be sent packing.
: St Finbarr’s
Two sides in a desperate hurry to accumulate points, otherwise their championship will be over before it ever truly began. Na Piarsaigh need to come with a response to the second half against Erin’s Own where they managed just 0-5, two of which came from the dead-ball.
: Na Piarsaigh.
Whoever comes off second best for the second outing in succession is going to find it near impossible to plot a route out of the group come Round 3.
: Dungourney
The second of this delicious East Cork double-header. After Michael Cahill’s late green flag heroics capped an unlikely comeback at Midleton three weeks ago, Cloyne will chase a much-improved start here.

After sizable opening rounds defeat, both are in desperate need of a response and a victory here. Carrigaline won the corresponding group fixture by a single point last year.

A first championship meeting since the 2023 relegation play-off where Kanturk ended the 97-year topflight status of the Blackpool establishment. This latest coming together doesn’t carry half as much weight, but it is still likely to prove decisive in determining who takes second place in the group. The Glen will have been seething with themselves for how their lead and numerical advantage came to nought against the Rockies. Expect that frustration to be channeled here. Liam O’Keeffe, Brian O’Sullivan, and Alan, Paul, and Colin Walsh will attempt to deliver another famous Kanturk victory at the Glen’s expense.

The Rockies know that a second victory here will push them into the knockout phase with a round to spare. They will chase that second victory full of confidence after their 14 men stepped up to sink the Glen in Round 1. Alan Connolly, Michael O’Halloran, Robbie Cotter, and Niall Cashman can move Blackrock to four points in the group table. Fr O’Neill’s have conceded seven goals in their last two championship outings. A serious tightening of the belt is required, otherwise they will be chasing a lost cause in Round 3.
: Blackrock
A fixture of monumental consequence. Mark Coleman’s bullet condemned Castlelyons to opening round heartbreak and so they must now overcome a Watergrasshill side - already with a win on the board - who proved in last year’s group phase that they are well capable of taking down a title favourite. Alan Fenton, Leon Doocey, and Anthony Spillane must steer last year’s beaten replayed finalists from potential early elimination.
: Castlelyons
Pressure off as a result of their late overtaking movement against Castlelyons, Cathal Hegarty, Cian Barrett, and their Cork senior crew can steer Blarney back into the knockout stages.
: Blarney
In Robbie O’Flynn, Conor Lenihan, Peter O’Shea, Matt O’Riordan, and Finn O’Brien, Erin’s Own should have too much attacking muscle to outgun a Killeagh attack where so much of the responsibility falls on Barry Walsh.
: Erin’s Own
Inniscarra v Ballinhassig, Ovens (N Fahy), 5pm Inniscarra will be chasing the same spread that saw seven players contribute two or more points from play in the opening round success over Carrigtwohill. Ballinhassig definitely harboured regret after a couple of late misses against Courceys was followed by an equaliser from the opposition goalkeeper. Now in possession of the knowledge that they can compete at this higher level, Ballinhassig must go and start conquering.
: Inniscarra
Ballincollig v Éire Óg, Riverstick (K O’Sullivan), 2.30pm Stephen Wills, Tadgh O’Connell, and Theo Morgan can keep the white flags raised and victories racking up for Ballincollig.
: Ballincollig
A fixture that will put a great amount of shape on this group. Can Shane Tarrant and Matthew Bradley lead newly promoted Aghabullogue to another notable win and potential early knockout involvement? Can Bishopstown avoid a seventh consecutive group phase defeat?
