Limerick SHC: Doon 0-23 Ahane 1-18

Doon came out on top of a Limerick Senior Hurling Championship east derby on a 0-23 to 1-18 scoreline over Ahane in Cappamore.

The defeat puts Ahane out of the championship and sees Doon reach the semi-final stages along with Na Piarsaigh.

Darragh Stapleton’s injury time penalty save from Tom Morrissey confirmed the win for Derek McGrath’s charges.

Morrissey had buried a penalty earlier in the half but was denied at the death, and they miss out on a quarter-final berth as a result.

Elsewhere, Na Piarsaigh eased to victory over relegated Patrickswell by 2-26 to 2-14 earlier this afternoon in Claughaun.

Goals from Peter Casey and Adrian Breen helped Shane O’Neill’s side to a 2-13 to 2-6 lead with Liam Fitzgerald and Evan Fitzgerald accounting for the Patrickswell three-pointers.

Patrickswell’s hopes of a comeback weren’t helped by a first half red card to Thomas O’Brien and Na Piarsaigh didn’t relent after the break.

Breen finished with 1-7, added to Will Henn’s 0-9 as the Caherdavin side cruised to a direct spot to the last four.

Doon should have had things a little easier against Ahane after navigating the strong breeze in their face during a tense first half.

McGrath’s men led 0-12 to 0-9 at the short whistle and looked in a great spot to confirm a comfortable winning margin.

Dean Coleman hit four first half points for the county champions, while Morrissey was Ahane’s scorer in chief, finishing with seven by half time.

The Ahane centre forward landed the two opening scores when the game resumed, with Doon’s response coming from a superb Aidan O’Connell finish following link up play by Jack Ryan and English.

Ahane kept to their task, however, despite trailing by six heading into the final quarter of what was a one-contest at that stage.

Conor Ryan’s strike from play and a Morrissey free reduced the gap to four and it was soon at one when Morrissey landed the penalty after being fouled by Tommy Hayes.

Ronan Fox then squared the game up, before Morriseey hit the target to put Ahane one up heading into the final stages.

English and a long range Cormac Ryan effort brought Doon back in front but Morrissey saw them back level for a fifth time as the game hit the hour mark.

Another English free and a superb Cian O’Donovan point from play put Doon nearly out of sight but there was a twist in the tale.

Morrissey floated in a free that resulted in a second penalty forbut this time Stapleton was equal to the task with his save denying Ahane a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Limerick SHC.
