Derry 1-12

Tyrone 0-9

An injury time goal from captain Conor Glass capped off Derry’s derby win over Tyrone at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon.

The home side led by three points at the break before facing into the wind but Tyrone’s wayward shooting – including 10 wides – was half the story of the game.

The other half was Cormac Murphy and his pace to nab three points and make the goal for Glass.

It was a win at a cost with Odhrán Lynch and Gareth McKinless replaced with injury and Michael McKernan hobbling off for the Red Hands. Derry had the wind at their backs and it was enough to pull an early Darren McCurry free wide before the home side got off the mark. It was the pace of Cormac Murphy that played in McGuigan for the opener.

Niall Loughlin doubled the Derry lead but they had an overlapping player with a goal on.

The Oaks had a second chance of goal but Ciaran McFaul’s high effort was thwarted by Padraig Hampsey.

When Tyrone opened their account, it was a Ciaran Daly score from a tricky angle in the seventh minute.

Derry had Odhrán Lynch to thank for making a save from Aodhan Donaghy after Ruairi Canavan’s pass unlocked the home defence.

Murphy and McGuigan kicked Derry further ahead with Paudi McGrogan making the score 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

Derry – and the breeze – put the squeeze on Morgan’s kick-outs, Glass won possession before Ethan Doherty put Derry five up.

A sweet Niall Morgan free, curling in the far post, had Tyrone back on the front foot.

Darragh Canavan began to pull the strings and win frees. One he kicked himself and the other slotted over by McCurry.

Tyrone’s kick-out variation helped them gain more of an influence in the middle but it was a second Ethan Doherty point that shot Derry into a 0-8 to 0-5 interval lead.

Points from Cormac Murphy turned the game for Derry who sat deep and invited Tyrone to shoot from distance.

Their four points from 16 second half shots drained the life out of Tyrone who never looked like getting in for the goal they needed.

With the wind strong enough to blow the ball of replacement goalkeeper Ryan Scullion’s tee, it took runs from Niall Toner, Paudi McGrogan and Declan Cassidy to give Derry and out ball.

Derry looked to have found the net through Conor Glass only for his goal to be disallowed for Murphy stepping out over the line.

There was a brilliant Niall Morgan save to deny Paul Cassidy during a spell of Derry running but it was Glass who put the icing on the cake with his late lob.
