Mohan and McAnespie clinch title for Ulster

Monaghan stars Caoimhe Mohan and Ciara McAnespie scored the late points as Ulster snatched a dramatic victory in Saturday’s MMI interprovincial ladies football championship final.

Ulster beat Connacht by 1-10 to 1-8 in Kinnegad to claim the title for a third time in four seasons after the westerners led by 1-10 to 0-8 approaching the finish. But Donegal’s Eilish Ward bagged an equalising goal before a brilliant point from Mohan put Ulster a point clear.

Mohan then turned provider for McAnespie, who fisted over to secure Ulster’s sixth interprovincial crown.

At half-time, Connacht were two points clear, 1-4 to 0-5. After Donegal’s Geraldine McLaughlin and Mayo’s Fiona McHale traded early scores, Sarah Brady’s point put Connacht in front. Roisín Leonard extended the lead before McHale scored an excellent solo goal to open up a 1-3 to 0-1 lead.

McLaughlin and Cora Courtney responded for dogged Ulster before Mayo superstar Cora Staunton lofted over a free after she was fouled. Connacht were four points clear, but Ulster rallied with the final two points of the opening half, scored by McLaughlin and Sinéad Greene.

Sharon Courtney lifted the silverware for Ulster.

In the shield final, Leinster defended their crown with a comfortable 3-12 to 2-3 victory over Munster.
