A teacher once told me there are only two types of story; a hero goes on a journey, and a stranger rides into town. 

To illustrate his point, he used just two texts - Homer's The Odyssey (an obvious one), and Shane, by Jack Schaefer, the most stranger-rides-into town novel you might ever have the joy to read.
