THE Flaxmills in Skibbereen was the product of a tax-incentive scheme to encourage development in designated areas in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The scheme fuelled a boom in holiday home and apartment construction, heavily targeted at investors.

Thirty years down the line and with housing in increasingly tight supply, many such properties are now owner-occupied, such as No 4 The Flaxmills.

It’s easy to see why an owner would like it as a permanent base: Dreamy views over the Ilen River, best enjoyed from a river-facing patio.

The 10-house scheme also has a shared slipway, so fans of on-water activity, like kayaking or SUP, are nicely set up.

Auctioneer Pat Maguire is selling No 4, and he says it’s ideal for an individual buyer or for a couple.

“I think it will be a permanent home, because the location is so good, just a short walk from Skibbereen town centre.”

The 93sq m, three-bed townhouse is in excellent order, tastefully decorated, “and very much walk-in”. The price is €295,000. Driving time to Cork City from Skibbereen is about 90 minutes and the town itself is well resourced and close to the best of West Cork.

VERDICT: A very pretty setting for a permanent base.
