Garden Q&A: My lawn looks a mess this winter. What can I do?
After the storm: A weather-lashed backyard. File picture
My lawn looks a mess after all the recent rain, wind and frost. What should I be doing in my room outside at this time of year?Â
A winter lawn will always look a little worse for wear, so don’t be disheartened. Rain, frost and short days all slow growth, and the grass simply can’t recover as quickly as it does in spring.Â
At this time of year, the best thing you can do is tread lightly — avoid walking on the lawn when it’s waterlogged or frozen, as that can compact the soil beneath.
If leaves have gathered in heavy drifts, gently lift them off to let in a bit of light and air.Â
Mowing isn’t a weekly task now, but you can give the lawn a light cut if there has been some growth. Just raise the mower blades high and only do it when the ground is firm enough to walk on without marking it.
Moss and general untidiness are normal in winter. Come spring, the lawn will pick up again.
