Man, 60s, killed in collision between car and van as two others hospitalised

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who was travelling on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan, particularly between 1pm and 2pm, to come forward.

A third person has died on Irish roads in less than a week following a crash in Co Cavan.

A man in his 60s was killed when a car and a van collided on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virginia and Cavan, shortly before 2pm on Monday.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to Cavan General Hospital.

A female passenger in the car, also aged in her 60s, seriously injured and airlifted to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who was travelling on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan, particularly between 1pm and 2pm, to come forward.

Gardaí are particularly appealing to motorists who may have dashcam or other camera footage of the area during this time to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

The latest fatality follows two other deaths on Irish roads in recent days.

Last Friday, a motorcyclist aged in his 60s died following a collision on the N56 at Termon, Co Donegal.

Last Wednesday, a motorist in his 50s was killed in a collision involving a van on the R587 at Gloun North, near Dunmanway, Co Cork.

It brings to 114 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far in 2026, compared with 101 at the same stage in 2025.
