Can we apply for the vacant property refurbishment grant if we intend to do most of the renovation work on our vacant traditional farmhouse ourselves?
Yes. Much of what's covered in the grant relates to materials. Just get your approval through your local authority, and during the course of the works, keep your receipts/invoices faithfully for everything you buy that is outlined as covered by the grant.
The grant includes seriously useful free monies, including a hefty €21,000 towards finishes including external doors, windows and windowsills — not to be sniffed at in upping your energy performance.
With up to €50,000 for a vacant home like yours, the grant is user-friendly, intended to cover a variety of situations, and can work well for a competent DIYer. The amount you get is based on a cost assessment by your local authority.
There is an additional grant aid for expert conservation advice you may be entitled to if are refurbishing a vacant traditional farmhouse. Email conservationadvicegrants@housing.gov.ie.
Remember to allow for all interest on any loan you take out, as the payments are retroactive on completion. For more information go to gov.ie.
