Letter to the Editor: Crucial for media to call out racism and bigotry

Your editorial lifted the spirits — ‘Remittance comment controversy: A shameful misuse of our parliament’ (Irish Examiner, November 14). It is crucial now that the media plays a full part in calling out bigotry of all kinds and most especially when the culprits are masquerading as public representatives.

Our political parties must also now resolve to expel any member who utters racism or bigotry of any kind. Members of the public must also act by simply refusing to give a vote to any candidate or party which shows any tolerance for prejudice of any kind.

Noel Grealish’s dog-whistling in the Dáil was particularly sickening as it identified people from Nigeria for attack. Does he not realise that vital services such as healthcare are now totally reliant on persons from there and elsewhere to function.

Imagine for a moment you find yourself lying on a trolley in one of our crammed A&E units having become ill, who would you prefer to see at your side? A dark-skinned medic that hails from Africa or some other exotic place, or a loud-mouth narcissist from nearby Galway. It really is a no-brainer.
