Readers' Blog: Time for stories as Gaeilge in the ‘Examiner’

I am sad to see our very own paper exiting the Crosbie dynasty HQ but I am glad to see The Irish Times are their preferred takeover company of the daily broadsheet. I compliment The Irish Times on featuring a Gaeilge piece weekly, which is another incentive for me to purchase.

I gather from organisers of the annual Culture Night in September, that there is a disappointing decrease in the number of Irish-language events, even in Cork City and county and this is a tinneas cinn to me. I read that Cois Life Gaeilge publishers are folding due to a decrease in writer and reader interest.

I feel our native language is getting weaker by degrees and as this is Bliain Na Gaeilge I feel the need for some/more Irish content in newspaper publications. Gaeilge conversation groups are eager to meet and enjoy the cómhrá na Gaeilge socially and look for reading material to initiate discussion and scéalta cois tine.

I hereby ask editor of the Irish Examiner to invite Irish-language writers to submit articles for a weekly supplement; after all we have sports, health, TV and adverts supplements so could we have a Gaelic one with title “Aon scéal?” or “Gaeilge beo”.

Lets do something special for Bliain Na Gaeilge to rescue the demise

of our native tongue in parts of our isle, as the old seanfhocal sensibly preaches regarding “that stitch in time”... Ní hé lá na gaoithe lá na scolb.
