Reader's Blog: Ireland loses more than a rugby game to Australia
Watching Ireland lose the rugby match against Australia wasn’t the only sad thing to cross my mind last weekend.
The bigger issue surely was watching the ocean of green and the many thousands of our fantastic young Irish men and women thronging the stadium in Brisbane. The same phenomenon will be seen again today and next Saturday where again many more thousands of our young emigrants, driven out by a failed state, will gather to support the team.
We witnessed the same scandal in Soldier Field in Chicago last year against the All Blacks when the majority of the 68,000 in the stadium were again our young Irish, sons and daughters of parents reduced to communicating with their loved ones through the odd Skype or text.
Regrettably many thousands more of our highly educated young reside in Canada, New Zealand and the UK and tragically many more are still leaving today.
While some will return to Ireland, there is no doubt that the majority will stay put, attracted by the lifestyle, the weather and well paid jobs in well run organisations.
Crucially they will drive the economies of their adopted countries forward with their energy, enthusiasm, education and brilliance, leaving massive gaps in all aspects of the business, social and cultural life in Ireland.
This mass emigration is a scandal and is the living and ugly legacy of the financial crash of 2008 when Fianna Fáil politicians, the bankers and senior civil servants, combined to wreck the Irish economy and society.
This was followed by a brutal Fine Gael austerity programme, opening the flood gates for many of our young and not so young to leave our shores for good.
Lest we forget.
