Reader's Blog: Please vote yes for the exiles who cannot

Scotland has been my home for 15 years, close enough to stay in touch, but still many miles away when nephews are born, or cousins pass away. I love Scotland, but I’m Irish and I’ve longed to be back for more than half the time I’ve been away.

My wife and I have one child, and we’re hoping to have another soon, to add to the excitement, there’s a strong possibility the next one will be Irish. Unfortunately the joy of finally being home is dulled, tarnished with the fear of my wife being pregnant in Ireland.

When she was pregnant the first time, I worried every time she felt ill, or stumbled, I worried about our unborn son, but I didn’t need to be overly worried about her. Here in Scotland there was no constitutional straightjacket standing in the way of any necessary intervention.

Please repeal the Eighth Amendment, for the safety of my wife, my sisters and my friends. Vote yes on Friday, I wish I could.
