From Barnsley to the Bernabéu and now from Munich to Macclesfield: Manchester City’s modern journey is threatening to take the scenic route again.

Up through the Alps, down through the valleys and now, perhaps, all the way back down to the dark caves and cracks of the underworld. After a quarter of a century climbing towards heaven, are we about to discover it was a revolving door we were charging through?
