Lesson of Punchestown
I’m surprised that political commentators have not raised the single most important aspect of this fiasco, namely the secrecy of the Government.
This is a prime example of why the Government emasculated the Freedom of Information Act; it does not want the ordinary citizen to know or find out how government is conducted.
It also does not want the press to report on its actions.
The Information Act must be reinstated in its original form and the press must campaign for this to happen. It is also important that opposition parties demand that the act be reinstated.
If the Government does not fear the public knowing how it conducts itself on our behalf, then they can have no objections to the act being reinstated.
If they fail to do so, they can only be trying to hide more things from public scrutiny.
