No place in our hearts for Jeanie Johnston
There are several groups over there, especially on the west coast, interested in buying and running sail-training and museum ships. It may well be a question of getting it out of sight and out of mind before selling it for a pittance.
Ireland has had its great chance and spurned it. There has been no State agency interest. The Kerry Group are to be lauded for their practical help in keeping the project afloat but, understandably, they are ending their link with the ship after a great effort over the last 21 months.
Go and look at the sail ship soon while it is lying forlornly laid up at the end of North Custom House Quay in Cork. Because you may never have that chance again. It seems as if another great opportunity for Ireland will have been thrown away. We can only blame ourselves.
