Indaver replies to query about toxic emissions

NORCOTT Roberts (Irish Examiner, March 6) states that he wants a yes or no answer to his question about emissions and ash from our proposed incinerator in Ringaskiddy.

Yes. The emissions and ash from the operation of the facility will contain dioxins and heavy metals. However, the levels of these will be below recognised safety standards set by the World Health Organisation and the European Commission.

Waste management systems, be they recycling, composting, incineration or landfill, all have environmental impacts. It is not possible to operate anything without having an environmental impact. Home heating, cars and other transport systems also impact on the environment. However, the World Health Organisation, the European Commission and every government in Europe judge modern incinerators as a necessary part of a modern waste-management system which don’t endanger the environment or public health.
