Human catastrophe should have come first

THE front page of the Irish Examiner in the aftermath of the Madrid bombings, with its sensationalist headline ‘Al Qaida Strikes Again,’ was offensive and wildly speculative.

Human catastrophe should have come first

It was offensive to the sentient person who recognises that the immediate story was one of human catastrophe, especially in the absence of any confirmation as to which group of psychopaths the perpetrators belonged.

Most international broadsheets recognised the overwhelming devastation of the events and treated speculation as to who was responsible as ongoing and hypothetical. Unfortunately, The Irish Examiner demonstrated more concern for lurid page design than empathy for the victims of mindless brutality. The terrorists crave sensation, and you hand it to them on a plate.
