Stamp duty is bad for the environment

I SYMPATHISE with the idea of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Stamp duty is bad for the environment

However, take my journey to work of 22 miles.

I could sell my house and buy another one much closer to work.

The barrier is the 6%-to-10% stamp duty I would pay to the Government in the process.

On a transaction of say €300,000, stamp duty at 6% would amount to €18,000. This would pay for an awful lot of diesel, enough for about 220,000 miles in a VW Golf.

So I stay where I am, and the environment suffers. Who is to blame?

The Government, of course.
