We can all help to save the salmon

WHILE the debate about drift netting continues and Marine Minister Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher procrastinates, perhaps we the public could help save the wild salmon.

We can all help to save the salmon

While almost all agree that drift-net fishermen should be well compensated for their loss of livelihood, this is not likely to be acceptable to all net men in view of the ‘we’re not for sale’ line heard on RTE news recently. Any agreed cessation is likely to take time.

In the interim perhaps we, the public, could encourage restaurateurs and fishmongers not to trade in wild salmon by not buying it while the Government could discourage the export trade in it.

After all no one would endorse buying corncrake breast, eating orangutan steak or exporting rhino horn, would they?
